Travel Safely Through Spain

If you’re headed to Spain for a holiday, it’s important that you remember to travel safely.  There are many different ways of protecting yourself and your family while on holiday.  Some of these are very obvious, but some of them are things that some people simply don’t think about until it’s too late.

One thing you absolutely must do while in Spain is protect your identity.  Do not leave your passport or other identification in plain sight in your room.  However, you may not want to always carry it in your wallet or purse, either.  If either item is stolen, you lose not only your money but also your identification.  Some people carry their passports in small slipcases that they can wear on a lanyard around their necks.  Others may store their passports in an inner pocket in their luggage.

Walking around during the day in Spain is very safe in most cities.  However, walking around at night may not be as safe in some areas.  This is especially true if it’s your first night in a new place.  You may get lost trying to find your hotel or other location.  In this case, it may be better to look into getting a hire car in Spain.  This way, you won’t be walking around in a strange city on your own.  It also gives you the option of driving to just about anywhere in Spain without dealing with train schedules or the like.

While few people get mugged in large Spanish cities, it is always a possibility no matter where you are.  Whenever you travel, you want to make certain that you do not keep all of your money in the same place.  You may want to hide some money in your luggage or on your person.  Some people put several large bills in the bottom of their shoe, for example.

Always remember when travelling to guard your personal items.  Never let anything out of your sight when you are out and about seeing everything that the country has to offer.  Do not leave your purse or shopping bags at a restaurant table when going to the restroom, for example, even if you’ll only be gone for a few minutes.

You also want to be careful when talking to strangers.  While it may sound obvious, do not give out your hotel information or any of your personal information.  Exchanging emails with someone you’ve talked to over several days may be OK, but giving out your actual address is not a good idea.  Likewise, never give your passport to anyone or let anyone look through it because they could memorize your personal information.
