Level of Motorbike Insurance Cover

When deciding on motorbike insurance, there are several things that you will need to take into consideration. Of course you want to make sure that you have adequate cover to suit you, your bike and your circumstances. This includes paying an affordable premium.

Although there are many factors that are taken into consideration when determining your premium, the first stop is to look at what level of cover you are taking. From there all the other factors come into play.

There are several levels of cover that you can choose from:

  • Third party only - This is the lowest level of cover that you can take. Third party only cover will only pay for the damages to a third party’s vehicle in the event of an accident. None of your damages will be covered. You will also not be covered in the event that your bike is damaged in any other way or if it is stolen.

  • Third party, fire and theft - The next level of cover will pay for the damages to a third party’s vehicle in the case of an accident. In addition to that, you will be covered should your bike take fire, or if your bike is stolen. This is usually recommended as the essential cover that you need.

  • Comprehensive - Also known as full comprehensive, this cover is the ideal cover for you. With this level the third party is covered, your own damages are covered plus you can add some extras to the cover if you want to. This should be your aim when you’re looking for motorbike insurance.

  • Legal expenses - Sometimes this cover comes as a standard benefit on a full comprehensive level, but mostly it’s an optional extra. The legal expenses are there to help you pay for the legal costs of getting your money back from a third party if the accident wasn’t your fault. It can also be used to recover costs of medical treatment as a result of the accident and time off work.

  • Personal accident and breakdown - These are two more optional extras that you can add to your full comprehensive cover. The personal cover will cover things such as medical costs that you incur as a result of the accident, whereas the breakdown cover will help you in the case where you suffer a breakdown or mechanical fault on the side of the road.

The key thing to remember is that the more benefits you add to your insurance, the more you’re going to pay. If your budget is already squealing then you may want only the Third party cover. Otherwise, look at your needs and choose wisely.
